Glenelg North Residence

Client Brief

To create a modern and low maintenance home while achieving a tight budget.
The clients are empty nesters who wanted to down size to a new home more suited to their needs.. Due to constraints of block size, the kitchen living area became an important focal point of the home. The challenge was to achieve a fresh modern home with limitations of size and budget.

Design Theory

Exterior
The client wanted to create a modern exterior that had a timeless feel. We incorporated the use of render, colorbond, aluminium and rockface bluestone to provide interest  to a small façade that otherwise would be over powered by garaging.

Interior
Simple clean and timeless was again the order of the day for this project. The use of polished concrete floors and simple white walls, kitchen and vanities provides a neutral canvas on which the client can build. We designed the bathrooms with a minimal feel that maximised space and light. Neutral colours and extending the floor tile up one wall of the shower provides interest without instilling a use by date. We redesigned the kitchen from the original sketch to maximise storage space along the back wall with built-in pantry and appliance cupboards. The mirrored splashback reflects the courtyard and assists in increasing the feeling of space. The cooking island doubles as a  breakfast bench and creates  the centrepiece of the home.

Results

We have created a modern masterpiece from a small confined space. Interest has been achieved by using numerous finishes and textures rather than extreme uses of colour. The limited budget was adhered to and the clients have ended up with a new home suited to their lifestyle and taste.

This home is an example of how communication and professional advice can achieve dreams.
